As our retail market is overcrowded and our real jobs (you know, the ones that pay enough to actually buy things?) and our credit have dried up, I predict the failure of at least 3 national chains before June of next year.

Good luck to us all, it is going to be an ugly downfall.

I don’t think it will be that big a bust.People are going to shop they just may not buy the high end things.I will spend about the same as last year.Hopefully I will get more for the money but I doubt that as everything is so high.As prices go up sales go down.I do think that most people will shop more carefully than in past years and do less impulse buying.Retail will hit a slump probably after Christmas your friends should be on the lookout for that. Then Valentines and Easter come along by then things may be looking up.Let us hope.

don’t worry people continue to buy things that they don’t really need! just not as much as usual. Christmas rolls around, people will start to spend a whole lot more. I think that buying junk may not be AS big as in the past, but it will still be pretty big. Like for example I can’t find the wii fit or a wii for that matter anywhere and that’s a lot of money and yet they keep selling out. Even though we’re going through this big recession!

I don’t think we are going to have much of a problem at all. I know many who are “business as usual” when it comes to spending for the Holidays. In our small town of 60,000 our city economy is thriving. I love the “get up and help yourself” mentality. If your friends are worried then they should be pro-active and find another job.
Over all Americans may not spend as much but those who do will keep the economy afloat.

Really boils down to how much consumers spend. This is the answer to your questions. The way the economy is right now it looks kinda bleak.Job loss, and retailers closing their doors may be unavoidable in the near future.Consumer confidence is at a all time low. Most will save or pay bills rather than spend.Market is getting better but not as fast as we would like.

I’m a BBW associate, and our store has taken a hit. Our hiring numbers are WAY down for this holiday season. I don’t think we’re at risk of closing, but in the meantime, it’s stressful to work with such a limited staff.

I really hope the American public does what they do best this holiday season and goes out and SPENDS. We really need it. Stores that are hurting go to payroll and see where to cut hours. That means associates get fewer hours, less money each paycheck…then they go out and spend less money at other stores, their decrease in sales ends up hurting the other stores who then have to cut THEIR hours…it’s a vicious cycle. :[
